A driver and his mate were left to their fate after their car was dangerously parked when police pulled them over.
The Accra-bound cargo vehicle was on its way to deliver goods on Tuesday when the incident happened.
Ghana is tipped to lead Africa as the fastest growing economy in 2018 with a growth rate of eight per cent, according to the World Bank.
In its latest report dubbed ‘Global Economic Prospects: Sub-Saharan Africa’, the World Bank forecasts that growth in sub-Saharan Africa will pick up at 3.2 per cent in 2018, and Ghana will lead the economies in Africa with eight per cent followed by Ethiopia and Tanzania, which are expected to grow at 7.2 per cent.
But as TV3’s Thomas Adotei pappoe reports, these projections may be a mirage if institutions like the Ghana Police Service and other allied agencies responsible for ensuring safety shirk their duties.
It is common to see all kinds of road infractions on the Tema Motorway owing to its link to the Eastern Corridor of the country.
Tuesday was another episode of a bizarre attempt to save a mini-bus from falling on its side.
Without warning triangles, the cargo vehicle from Kajebi in the Volta Region was stopped by the police for routine check but left the scene when the obvious load tipped the bus to one side.
Worried by the dangerous nature of the parked vehicle, the driver with careless abandon assured onlookers.
“It will not fall. We have only given it support with the sticks, we have called another vehicle to come so we will transfer the goods.”
There are more questions than answers why the police fled the scene instead of ensuring that the vehicle does not pose any danger to other motorists and pedestrians.
Again, while it behoves on the police to have ensured standards for the loads, it appears some Ghanaians are only interested in their bread and butter.
When told the tilting of the vehicle was as a result of the heavy load, the driver replied: “Oh! This is even small”.
Government will have to be tougher on some of these infractions if projections that Ghana will lead economies in Africa is anything to go by.
