NPP picks PCs from September; elects prez next year

File picture[/caption] The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) will hold its parliamentary primaries to elect or endorse parliamentary candidates for the 2020 general elections across the country on September 28, 2019. A statement by the party’s General Secretary, John Boadu, on July 1, however, said the primaries will take place in constituencies where the NPP does not have sitting Members of Parliament – such areas are termed ‘Orphan Constituencies’ by the party. “The parliamentary primaries in respect of constituencies where the party has sitting MPs has been deferred to a later date,” the statement explained. The decisions were arrived at by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) pursuant to Article 12 of the party’s constitution, at its meeting held Monday, July 1, 2019, at the Alisa Hotel, Accra, it added. According to the statement, the party’s National Council also met after the NEC meeting and decided, “Pursuant to Article 13 of the Party Constitution, to hold presidential primaries sometime early next year.” The party’s National Steering Committee has therefore been tasked to as soon as possible, come out with guidelines and modalities for the conduct of both the parliamentary and presidential primaries for the 2020 general elections.
